OPI Silver Shatter: Confession

My confession is this:  I have kind of thought that shatters are stupid.  I don't know if anyone has noticed, but I haven't paid the trend any heed since it became a thing last fall or winter.  To me the crackle nail polishes look really dated and 90s, but not in a good way.  I was all set to not buy any crackle polishes, ever.  Nope, not for me.  The other day I was over at the hospital visiting my friend who had just had a baby (I held this tiny, warm, sleeping baby for a while and fell in love a little), and that hospital HAPPENS to be near an Ulta.  So I stopped in.  I stopped in and was greeted with OPI Silver Shatter.  It said, "Oh hey!  I'm shiny!"  And I bought it.  And then this happened.

I was skeptical at first.  I put it on and thought, "This isn't that great."  Then I watched it separate and thought, "Okay, this is kind of neat."  Then I saw it in the sun and I fell in love a little.  This is Silver Shatter over OPI Here Today...Aragon Tomorrow.

I reeeeaaaally like it.  I think it's the combination of the shimmer and the shatter that has me salivating; the solid colored shatters don't appeal much to me.  If OPI released a gold shatter I'd be all over it.  Can you imagine how it would look over China Glaze Wagon Trail?  Or over any olive green?  B-O-N-E-R.

Anyway, I wouldn't call myself a trend convert just yet, but I will say that I'm enjoying this look.  I'll probably experiment with it a little more and then eventually get tired of it, but for now it's pretty cool.  And now, a question I've been dying to ask, what're everyone's opinions on shatter or crackle polishes?  Are you on the band wagon or are you just kind of meh about them?

PS Last night I found out that finding the Twitter accounts of people in your professional life is truly horrifying.  TRULY HORRIFYING.  That is all.

  1. I've bought this black Barry M crackle when China Glaze and OPI hadn't released theirs yet. It's a nice effect but honestly not one I really see myself wearing on a daily basis (I look too messy already to give myself the luxury to ALSO have messy looking nails). But... I HAD to try and see because I'm so curious (and it's fun to watch the cracks appear) but I won't purchase more than this sole bottle. I considered the red OPI crackle of the Serena set but finally reasoned myself by admitting I would never wear it.

Truth to be told, the trend getting big has gone equal to my being tired of the whole crackle thing. That being said, I largely prefer a silver (or an hypothetic gold) crackle to a black.

(vous me manquez mademoiselle, j'espère que vous allez bien!)

  2. I was all over crackles when they came out, I thought I'll need every single one of them. Now that I have (all different brands, non O.P.I.) a black, a red, a blue (with shimmer), a silver (shimmer) and a white one, I'm cooling off. At least to that point that I don't want to buy every single one on the planet. Although I'd kill for a green one. ;) I do crackle my mani if I feel it will be a good combination. :)

  3. Sally Hansen has a set out, with a gold. Just sayin'.

I have black and silver, and am not sure if I will buy any more. It's a neat effect, but not one I like to see everywhere, on everyone, every day. It's also a bit of a goo fest when trying to remove it.

  4. I wasn't sure about the whole shatter thing either.. I never saw any bottles of it anywhere I went and I really had no interest in trying to find them. But when I was at the spa show in Vancouver BC the OPI booth had a big display of black shatter and they were selling fast and I decided I needed one just to try. I don't LOVE it but I think it looks cool sometimes.

I hadn't planned on getting anymore shatters but apparently my bestie found silver shatter while on her vacation and bought me a bottle. So I guess I'll have to try it!

Maybe I'll try the same combo you did.. I just love Here Today...Aragon Tomorrow. I always want to say Aragorn though. I'm a Lord of the Rings nut, haha.

  5. NATHALIE! I miss you too, beautiful! I read your guest post over on Them Pretty Colors and it made me miss reading your blog so much. I have to say that I'm kind of the same way with trends. The more popular they are the less keen I am to participate in them. I remember your post about Barry M crackle and I remember liking the look you did with it. Maybe it's just not for everyone, yes?

Ulmiel, I can see kind of wanting to horde crackles ;) I want to horde lots of things, so these are probably no different for most people! I'll probably use the silver over other things also, so we'll see how it goes.

Aprilitini, HOLY. SHIT. I saw the SH crackle display but I didn't pay attention to what colors were in it. Now I have to go back to Walgreens and find the gold. Sonofabitch. But thanks for the tip!

Tierney, I saw a combination that looked cool the other day...black shatter with China Glaze Electric Pineapple. It was super pretty. I'm sure you'll like silver too.

  6. Your gold crackle over green idea inspired me. I went to Walgreens this afternoon and got the SH gold! I think I'm going to try it over RBL No More War.

  7. I mostly hate the shatters. I don't really like having to revisit the late 80's early 90's, perhaps because I lived through them as a thirteen year old. Not a pretty time. However, I will say the silver looks nice, because as you said, ooh shiny.

  8. Anonymous, yeah now I think I need a gold shatter. Well, need is a strong word.

Bubblewrapper, for the most part I'm with you.

  9. Haha, you too are mortal! I like shatter, generally. Not too on board with the metallic ones (sooo... the opposite of you), but if I were to see silver shatter in person, I'm 99% sure I would buy it anyways. So weak.

and lol @ finding twitter accounts of coworker-type-people.

  10. So weak indeed, my friend. I am like a magpie with the shinies.

  11. I have a total love/hate relationship with shattering! I just saw the SH ones today and I have to admit....the gold and silver ones are calling to me! This combo looks super on you!

  12. I saw the SH shatters today, and had a hard time talking myself out of the gold. It's really pretty, and I don't like gold!

  14. Oh dear, I have never been big on gold, but a girl at work asked me to keep an eye out for a gold crackle. When I found the Sally Hansen I picked it up for her. The next day I watched her slap it on her almost-neon pink manicure and fell in love. Ran out to get it for myself that night. Get the Sally Hansen gold! Hurry! Can't wait to put it over red this holiday season.

  15. Haha, you guys are doing a really good job convincing me to get a gold crackle! I'll hunt at Walgreens tomorrow after work ;)

  16. This looks so cute! Sally Hansen has a new Crackle line - with a gold. I haven't tried that color but, I tried the black and pink and they're pretty awesome. Just FYI. ;)
